Snowflakes

Cutting out snowflakes can be a lot of fun and can create a lot of mess to clean up, but they are a great way to get some good scissor practice and have some fun. Almost everyone has done this project at one time, but here are some more ideas for you and your little artist to try with your snowflakes:

  • make sure you have sharp scissors. (Dull scissors can be frustrating!)
  • Usually you can fold the paper 2-3 (sometimes 4 times) before you start cutting
  • Use a light-weight paper like plain xerox paper or origami paper
  • Start with square paper, so that the design is symmetrical
  • Try to find new ways to fold the paper, like folding all the corners into the center, or folding it like an accordion
  • Cut out other shapes besides just triangles (squares, circles, hearts, stars, arrows, or other weird shapes)

What to do with your snowflakes when you're done:

  • decorate your windows with snowflakes
  • tie them on presents
  • use them as ornaments
  • make coasters with small snowflakes: use clear contact paper on both sides and cut off the extra contact paper around the edges. You can then punch holes around the edge and lace ribbon around the edge of the coasters)
  • Tie them together to make a garland
  • Hang them from your ceiling
  • Use them as stencils
  • Make mini ones for your doll house!
