Needed Materials

-
nice thick white drawing paper, white cardstock or White bristol paper (one sheet)
-
pencil & eraser
-
pictures of butterflies or fake craft butterflies (for inspiration)
-
photos or postcards of interesting landscapes
-
color pencils, markers, crayons or watercolor pencils
-
Fine Sharpie Marker
The following are needed if you will be creating a 3-D butterfly (optional):
-
Scissors
-
craft glue
-
foam core -cut into many small square pieces (1/2 inch X 1 inch or smaller)
-
12' x 12" Scrapbooking white paper
-
12" x 12" Scrapbooking paper (different color)
Directions:
-
Draw the body shape of the butterfly (usually a long ovalish shape) in the center of a regular paper.
-
Fold the paper in half (making sure 1/2 of the body is on each side of the fold)
-
Draw one side of the Butterfly wings, and with the paper folded in half, cut wings out (cutting both sides at the same time)
-
Trace this whole butterfly onto the nice thick white paper (in the center)
-
Create an interesting border/ pattern to go all the way around the edge of each wing. Inside the border, draw a landscape in each wing. Fill in the body and the rest of the wings with patterns and interesting designs.
-
Trace over all lines of the landscapes and the designs with a fine Sharpie marker (Be Careful!)
-
Use Sharpie to fill in parts of the designs and borders.
-
Color in the landscapes, and color in the rest of the patterns on each wing. (it makes it more interesting if you choose only 2-3 colors for the edges and patterns.
-
Cut out Butterfly. Fold each wing up along side of body (the best you can).
-
Glue boddy to White Scrapbook paper, using foamcore pieces to prop it up.
-
Fold the colored Scrapbook paper in half (diagonally) and then again diagonally (so it is in quarters). Cut a straight, wavy or zig-zag line across from one folded side to the other folded side, along long edge. Open it back up to see square frame. Flatten creases in corners and glue to white paper using foam core pieces under edges to prop up.
