Mission Statement

Inspiring creative self-expression, self-confidence and a sense of community while children and families learn to draw from real life.

Our Philosophy

Every student progresses at their own pace and every skill level is an important part of their artistic development.  Students should not be discouraged or rushed through any stage of their artistic development.

Our classes are based on the theory that learning how to draw or paint is a combination of good hand-eye coordination paired with good observation skills.  A working knowledge of how to use a chosen form of media is also important.   Repeated exposure to the different forms of media (pastels, watercolor, charcoal, etc) along with an interest in their own artistic development will strengthen a student’s artistic skills and confidence.  (Practice, Practice, Practice!)  Drawing from real-life objects will help students improve their observations skills and encourage them to find their own artistic style.

Meet our Instructors...

Crystal

Crystal R. Pyren is the owner of The Drawing Board Art Instruction. She has been teaching drawing and painting to children and families for over 7 years, in hopes of inspiring more children through art and helping them develop life-long art skills and fond memories.  She has also worked as a scenic artist, painting scenery at many local theatres including Village Theatre, Seattle Opera, and the 5th Avenue Theatre, since moving to Washington in 1992.  Crystal is the mother of 3 children, age 3, 11 & 13.

 Alina

Alina has received her formal Art Education from Regional Art Academy in Russia.  Her favorite mediums are oils and pastels, but she also enjoys watercolor, plein-air, and drawing.  Having commissioned her works to private parties, she is currently exploring different art mediums for her future career.  She has previous experience working with children of all ages.  However, she finds working with younger kids to be more rewarding due to their imagination and openness to all that’s new.  It is always fascinating to watch them release their genuine creativity.  Alina teaches Saturday drawing & painting classes and workshops in Renton & Issaquah.  She will also be teaching at the "Plein Air" Painting camp this summer.

  Patty

As the owner and artist of Makatura Murals, Patty creates beautiful hand-painted murals and fine art for all ages in both homes and businesses. She has been a professional artist for nearly two decades through her own business and as a scenic designer/artist for a number of theatres throughout the country and Seattle. She has been an instructor with The Drawing Board since January of 2009, and also offers private and group art lessons in Seattle.  Patty will be leading some workshops this summer and will be teaching Saturday classes in Issaquah starting in the Fall of 2011.  She will also be teaching at the "All Around Arts" camp, Drawing & Painting Camp (Issaquah) and the "Art of Nature" camp in Renton this summer.

 Michelle

These Instructors help at camps and make occasional appearances at classes & workshops:

  Kelly

Kelly is attending the University of Washington with the hopes of possibly becoming a nurse.  Art has always been her passion - from ceramics, to painting, to doodling - and she is excited to be able to help younger children in nurturing their love for the arts this summer!  Kelly will be teaching during the "All Around Arts" Camp in Issaquah and the "Drawing & Painting Camp in Renton.

  Sada

Sada is a hardworking spirit filled artistic teen. Between volunteering for after school art classes to running her own day camp, Sada loves to be involved with the young life of Issaquah and Renton. Sada has been painting and drawing since before she could walk, but her real passion is found in pottery wheels and kilns. Sada has taken two years of art at her middle school and attended a number of art camps and classes as a young girl. Although she has worked at tons of other summer camps, this is Sada’s first year with art camp and she is excited for what is to come.  Sada will be teaching at the "All Around Arts" Camp and at the "Plein Air" Painting camp field trip to Lake Sammamish.
